Inclusion Service for Students with Disabilities and SLDs

To improve participation in academic life for students with disabilities and SLDs — Specific Learning Disorders — LIUC has set up a dedicated service, in accordance with Law no. 17 of 28 January 1999 and Law no. 170 of 8 October 2010.

The service combines central coordination with widespread operational support and is based on a dedicated professional structure, the Pedagogical Team, which works closely with the Student Office and all other support services. Its aim is to ensure that students with disabilities and SLDs can benefit from a successful learning experience and acquire the preparation they need to approach the world of work with confidence.

The Inclusion Service for Students with Disabilities and SLDs is coordinated by the Rector’s Delegate for Disability and SLDs, a role currently held by Professor Eliana Minelli. In particular, to support students from an educational perspective, LIUC has established a Pedagogical Counselling Service specialised in learning-related needs. The pedagogical counselling activities are managed by Dr Daniela Mazzara.

The Inclusion Service also works with the Counseling and Well-Being Service to provide personalised support to students with specific needs.

More specifically, the consultants provide support in the following areas:

  • Guidance for first-year students: supporting students in choosing the most suitable Degree Programme and identifying useful strategies to begin their university journey.
  • Pedagogical counselling service, through individual interviews and group meetings: educational mediation in relation to students’ needs, to support course attendance and successful exam completion.

Students may also request a pathway to reflect on their personal study method and identify the most effective learning strategies for their academic success. To request counselling, please write to [email protected].

All students with disabilities and SLDs may contact Dr Elena Tosi at the Student Office — [email protected] — for administrative procedures and contact with the Inclusion Service. For matters relating to exemptions, students may contact Dr Sabrina Belli — [email protected].

Requests for full exemption from university tuition fees due to disability must be submitted with suitable documentation at the time of the student’s enrolment or registration for subsequent academic years, by the deadline for payment of the first instalment of the tuition fees.

LIUC is a member of CALD — Coordinamento Atenei Lombardi per la Disabilità, the Coordination of Lombardy Universities for Disability — which brings together all university delegates for disability and SLDs from universities based in Lombardy, with the aim of promoting constructive exchange with other universities in the region.

Students who wish to use the Inclusion Service must hold at least one of the following valid documents:

  • a “civil disability certificate”, pursuant to Article 20 of Law no. 102 of 3 August 2009;
  • a “disability assessment certificate”, pursuant to Law no. 104 of 5 February 1992;
  • medical certification attesting to a temporary disability, for example a broken arm;
  • a diagnosis of Specific Learning Disorder — SLD — obtained within three years of enrolment or after the age of 18, indicating at least one of the disorders covered by Law no. 170/2010 — dyslexia, dysgraphia, dysorthography, dyscalculia — and the appropriate nosographic codes.

Exceptionally, and at the sole discretion of the Inclusion Service, other medical documentation may be taken into consideration.

The Inclusion Service reserves the right to request any additional documentation, also in order to better ensure personalised support.

The Inclusion Service is also available to students spending a period of study mobility at LIUC. These students must submit the necessary documentation in English to the International Relations Office and may send any further requests and/or enquiries to [email protected].

Students who decide to use the Inclusion Service to obtain pedagogical mediation and the necessary equivalent measures must submit a request for each exam — partial or full — through the dedicated portal at https://inclusione.liuc.it. Requests must be submitted within 15 working days before the exam date. The 15 working days before the exam date do not include the exam date itself, public holidays, Saturdays and Sundays, or University closure days, which are published on the portal in the Notices and Important Communications section of the Inclusion Service web page.

If a student requests the use of a formula sheet, concept map or word list, and the deadline for submitting the request falls before the end of classes, the student must make sure to upload it to the platform at least 80% complete, indicating in the notes how many classes are still remaining.

Please note, however, that the document approved by the lecturer cannot be modified. Only if incomplete, it may be supplemented with the addition of a maximum of 3–4 formulas, words or concept nodes relating to the remaining classes. The final version, if supplemented, must be sent directly by email to the lecturer responsible for the course, copying in the Inclusion Service. It is not possible to upload documents to the platform after the measures have been approved.

The document must, of course, be sent within an appropriate timeframe.

Except in duly communicated exceptional cases indicated by course lecturers, the formula sheet, concept map or word list is not to be understood as a list of all course content, but as a document containing only and exclusively the formulas, words or concepts considered most complex.

Furthermore, the formula sheet may not contain titles, text, explanations, procedures, inverse and derivative formulas, graphs, textual prompts or definitions.

With regard to concept maps and diagrams, which are only permitted in the first year, please note that they must be concise and contain only keywords or concept nodes. They do not constitute summaries of all course materials, but only report the most complex concept nodes. For a semester-based exam, a maximum of 2 sides is permitted; for an annual exam, a maximum of 4 sides is permitted.

Students are advised that requests must be managed from a PC in order to correctly view all sections of the portal.

The pedagogical counselling team will manage all necessary mediation with lecturers.

The proper functioning of all procedures is made possible by the highest level of trust and responsibility on the part of all parties involved in the process: students, lecturers and the Inclusion Service.

Students are required to monitor and check for any updates and communications on the website page dedicated to the Inclusion Service. COMMUNICATION BY EMAIL REGARDING THE APPROVAL OF EQUIVALENT MEASURES IS NOT PERMITTED.
