Degree programme

Banks, markets and corporate finance (Dual Degree @New York)

Degree programme
Banks, markets and corporate finance (Dual Degree @New York)

The BMFI course is also offered as a “dual degree @New York”.

After having successfully completed the first year at LIUC and the second at the Stevens Institute of Technology (SIT), the student obtains either the LIUC – LM 77 degree in Business Economics and Management, specialising in Banks, markets and corporate finance, or a SIT Master of Sciences – more specifically either the Master in Finance (MFin) or the Master in Financial Analytics (MFA). Both SIT Master of Sciences programmes hold STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering, Mathematics) qualifications under current US legislation.

With this course of study, students refine their knowledge of finance with the following benefits:

  • obtaining two qualifications, one Italian, the other American, with consequent possibility of access to the labour market both in the European Union and in the USA without bureaucratic constraints regardless of citizenship or residence. A person who obtains a US STEM-qualified degree automatically obtains a work permit in the United States for a period of two years after obtaining the degree.
  • an educational experience in major financial centres on both continents, acquiring full professional mastery of English;
  • broader learning opportunities by being able to finalise the academic year at SIT with either the Master in Finance or the Master in Financial Analytics. In the first case, students have three possible courses to choose from:
    a) Investment Banking & Valuation;
    b) Financial Analytics and Risk;
    c) Wealth Management. In the case of the Master’s degree in Financial Analytics, a more technology-driven option suitable for those aspiring to careers in the fintech segment, the student can choose between two courses:
    a) Advanced Risk Analytics
    b) Machine Learning.

Structure and Study Plan

The first year of studies takes place at LIUC where students follow courses taught mainly in Italian. The classes are taken from those offered in the two-year BMFI programme for which there is no equivalence with classes offered by SIT.

The second year of study takes place at SIT where students follow courses taught entirely in English, with a choice of those offered as part of the Master of Finance or Master of Financial Analytics. The choice between these two Master’s degrees must be made when applying for admission.

The curriculum can be consulted here.

Students must comply with the curriculum indicated because obtaining the double degree follows from the recognition of certain equivalences between specific courses offered by LIUC and similar courses offered by SIT. A different selection of courses could result in the omission of one or more of these equivalences, making it impossible to obtain one or other or even both degrees. In some specific cases, recognition of the equivalence of a teaching course by the two universities may be subject to the achievement of a minimum grade (see details of the curriculum).

Admission to the two universities

Places available for the Dual Degree: maximum 20

The student must apply for admission to the Master’s degree course in Business Administration and Management – class LM-77 in the Banks, markets and corporate finance course at LIUC, as indicated in the following link.For assistance with the process, please contact the Student Secretariat at [email protected].

After a positive response for enrolment at LIUC, the candidate must apply for admission to SIT through the International Relations Office at LIUC. For assistance with the process, please contact the International Relations Office at [email protected].

Since these are two distinct but subordinate and consecutive decision-making processes, it should be noted that approval of the application by LIUC, but not by SIT, prevents access to the Dual Degree.

To apply for admission to SIT, the student must:

  1. hold a BA in economics or engineering with a grade of no less than 90/110;
  2. if not a native English speaker, be in possession of one of the following three English language tests with a grade no lower than the minimum indicated and valid at the time of application
  • TOEFL IbT – 90
  • IELTS – 7
  • DUOLINGO – 110

Applications with lower scores, provided they are above 75 for the TOEFL, 6.5 for the IELTS and 100 for DUOLINGO, are still considered, but admission, if granted, is conditional on the student taking an ESL course while at SIT.

A curriculum vitae, a statement of purpose and two letters of recommendation and reference are also required for admission. The result of the GMAT and/or GRE is not required, but may contribute to a better assessment of the application.

The curriculum for this course is available here.
