Family Business Management

Course in English

Family businesses, i.e. companies whose ownership is controlled by a family, account for 85% of Italian companies and employ 70% of the country’s workforce. The course offers participants the opportunity to acquire knowledge and skills to successfully operate in the management and governance of small, medium and large family businesses.

The specific features of these enterprises in terms of management, organisation, finance, marketing, innovation and valorisation of the production tradition are studied in order to foster their development and support their growth.

Goals

  • To acquire a comprehensive multidisciplinary background necessary to understand the economic, social and legal phenomena affecting the functioning of family businesses.
  • To develop adequate knowledge of the direction, management and organisation of such enterprises.
  • To stimulate the ability to recognise and exploit opportunities for growth, especially through innovation and internationalisation.

Teaching

Teaching is practical, with team work for case studies and simulations, company visits and meetings with business families and professionals. The language of instruction is English. The international character of the course is enhanced by the multinational composition of the class, with the participation of foreign exchange students and the numerous opportunities to spend a study period abroad. The course consists of four modules:

  • Family Business Management & Organisation
  • Business Heritage
  • Innovation & Marketing for SMEs
  • Family Business Evolution: Governance & Finance

Professional Profiles

The specific didactic content of the course makes it possible for the younger generation to enter a family business (their own or another) with the knowledge and skills to support its success or promote its renewal. The general preparation, however, also confers access to the classic employment options of business administration graduates (entrepreneurs, managers or consultants).
