Topic
Regulatory pressures on one hand and client companies operating in the manufacturing and service sectors on the other, have begun to exert a strong influence on the shipping industry, making demands to improve the sustainability of shipping processes.
Are freight forwarders ready and equipped to adequately respond to these pressures?
The Green Forwarding project, carried out in collaboration with Fedespedi (National Federation of International Shipping Companies), aims to provide the essential tools to assess and enhance their environmental performance. Specifically, the project aims to identify sustainability Key Performance Indicators (KPIs) with specific reference to the freight forwarding sector in order to establish guidelines for reducing the environmental impact of shipping logistics activities.
Objectives
With the aim of promoting a green culture among international shipping companies, the project intends to investigate the main indicators for evaluating environmental sustainability (KPIs) to make shipping more environmentally friendly.
Through a structured analysis of informative sources such as standards, regulations, reports, and scientific journals, as well as pilot interviews conducted with freight forwarding companies associated with FEDESPEDI, Green Forwarding will develop a practical handbook in the form of guidelines. This handbook will be a valuable tool for both companies that are yet to embark on their transition towards environmental sustainability and as a reference point for companies that have already started this journey, providing a benchmark for success in adopting sustainable practices.
Results
The research is currently underway.
The research results and the “guidelines” to promote sustainability in the freight forwarding sector will be published in the Fedespedi Journal, accessible to all member companies, and will be presented at conferences and/or conventions of the Green Transition Hub.
