Green Logistics Emissions and Externalities Calculator (GLEEC)

The transportation sector accounts for 25% of the EU’s total emissions, and the externalities associated with this activity amount to nearly 1 trillion euros. It is therefore of fundamental importance for companies to measure the effects that their activities have on the environment and society in order to intervene, become more sustainable, and reduce costs.

The Green Logistics Emissions & Externalities Calculator (GLEEC) represents a user-friendly toolbox that allows for easy and fast examination of the sustainability level of one’s logistics and distribution model.

Topic

The transportation sector plays a crucial role in the modern economic system, and there is an increasing need to measure the effects that emissions and negative externalities have on health and society as a whole. In the EU, for example, transportation accounts for 25% of total emissions, and the externalities associated with this activity amount to nearly 1 trillion euros.

Therefore, companies are increasingly prompted by EU directives to reduce GHG emissions by at least 50% by 2030 and are interested in transitioning to more sustainable transportation solutions to gain a competitive advantage in terms of cost savings, increased revenues, or both, with a long-term vision.

Furthermore, this issue will become even more relevant as more companies will be required to prepare mandatory sustainability reports. These documents gather information on the environmental, social, and economic impact of business activities and become a fundamental tool for assessing the sustainability of the business model. In particular, the transportation sector is one of the main environmental impact factors for many companies, making it increasingly important to adopt sustainable transportation solutions and evaluate the environmental impact of business choices.

Objectives

The GLEEC (Green Logistics Emissions & Externalities Calculator) aims to develop a user-friendly tool in collaboration with SCS Consulting that allows for easy and fast examination of the sustainability level of one’s logistics and distribution model, based on internationally certified standards such as the GLEC (Global Emission Logistics Council) framework, which is the only globally recognized methodology for calculating and recording the impact of GHGs along the supply chain.

How It Works The GLEEC is a simulation tool that, based on input parameters such as emission factors (provided by accredited entities), types of transportation used, quantities transported, distances travelled, and number of trips made, allows for the analysis of emissions and negative externalities produced by current processes and the ex-ante evaluation of potential cost savings resulting from the adoption of new sustainable solutions. The integration of GLEEC into SCS Consulting’s TPM model provides a 360° view, both retrospectively and predictively, of the company’s logistics and distribution activities.

Results

The research results are shared through reports, articles published in international scientific journals, national press, and presented at international conferences and/or conventions organized in the field of sustainable and circular innovation.
